Top 5

OK, here we go.

5:  Vienna Teng, Land Sailer. This is Athena's #1 by the way.

Buy this album!

4:  From California.  Paramore.  Last Hope

3: Sorry for the repeat bands, but so it goes when a band is great.  By the way, watch the backwards version to get the story.
But don't do it if you are feeling down.
Yeah Yeah Yeah, Sacrilege

2: My favorite artist, Vienna Teng, she gets two in the top 5. Executive privilege. Level Up

1: Just listen to the lyrics. Jillette Johnson, Cameron.

6-10

10:  Miss Li, Sugar Coma
Love this Swede.  This album is hard to get in America ( I resorted to Ebay) but worth it.  Anyway, here is a youtube of a live performance.

9:  Oh Land,  Love You Better

8:  Sara Bareilles, Brave

Probable the best known song on my list. But I won't that hold that against this wonderful song from the wonderful artist.

7:  Jillette Johnson. Pauvre Coeur

Did I say that I think she is the new artist of the year (in my mind)? There is a reason.

6:  Ms Mr,  Hurricane

Now, when I started checking this duo out because they were coming the 7th Street Entry (and I do this with a lot of artists), I was blown away.

Last honorable mentions for 2013

But there is not shame in it.  These are great songs.

MsMr is a great duo I saw at 7th Street Entry this year. Hail from NY.  Enjoy this one.  These guys are good.

Fantasy

Love this duo, Digital Daggers.  I believe they are from LA.  Correct me if I am wrong.

Did I mention I love Vienna Teng?  Here is Copenhagen. Oh, and this is why I love her.

The next four probably give a hint as to why I am an anglophile.

Savages, Shut Up!

Here is a great Welsh band

Nina Nesbitt is going to be huge.

Another UK singer, Lauren Aquilina. "Sinners"

Honorable mentions, part 3

This 23 year old from NY is the new star of the year in my mind.  And I got to see her live at The Cedar.

Here is a wonderful singer from Philadelphia named, well, Phildel.

Back down under with Stonefield's "Put Your Curse on Me"

As long as we're in that part of the world, here are two from the New Zealand born Gin Wigmore

From the Netherlands,  ReVamp's "Wolf and Dog".  By the way, when Nightwish canned their second lead (Anette Olzon) in the middle of tour, the singer from ReVamp (Floor Jansen) took over.  Just some Symphonic Metal trivial for you all.  (Sorry, noYoutube link, so here is a  spotify link).  Love this song.

More honorable mentions

If you know me, you that Vienna Teng is my favorite artist.  I was super privileged to see her perform live this month in Minneapolis (third time).  Here is one from her amazing album AIMS (and you can guess there are more up the list).  Oh, and since this is not an official video, I want to remind you all to go out and buy her album if you like this.  Heck, buy all her albums.  That's an order!

The Breaking Light (with Alex Wong)

While Vienna Teng currently hails from Michigan, here is a very young talent who is from there.
Olivia Millerschin,  Screw Valentine's Day!

Here is a great band from Vancouver, which may well be my favorite city.  (Top 5 for sure)

Sticks (is the video a little weird?  sure.  But it's a great band).

This one qualifies because the album is 2013.  Anyway, great song by this Swiss-German duo.

Boy,  Little Numbers

Here is a song from one of the best albums of the year (I mean, it's really good).

Sara Bareilles,  I Choose You .

Best of 2013, some honorable mentions

Originally,  I was going to post my top 10 for 2013.  But as gathered a list of prospects, it became clear that 10 would be tough.   So here is what I have decided to do:  I am going to post around 15 honorable mentions.  Then my top 25. Though, I only plan to rank order the top 10.

A few points:
First, these are my favorite songs from 2013.  I make no adjustment for general popularity.  So, if I have a song from an album that I love, it can make the list.  Even if very few people will have heard of it.   But a song that is super popular may not make my list even if I do happen to like it.  It needs to be among my personal favorites.   And anyway, my bias to provide whoever bothers to read this with music they may not be familiar with.

Second, because they have to be songs I know, I am certainly omitting great songs and artists that I should know about, but do not. Or that I do know about but have not listened to much of their music.  And for that reason, my list is dominated by female artists and female fronted bands.  Why?  Because that is my preference in music.  I don't know why. Why do some people like rap?  Don't know (seriously, I don't).  But that is their preference.  They don't owe me an apology. And I make no apologies for my preferences.

OK,  so here it goes  (in no particular order).

Honorable Mentions:

Oh Land, that wonderful singer from Denmark has 2 honorable mentions.  I had the privilege of seeing her at the Varsity Theater this year.

Renaissance Girls

Pyromaniac

Daft Punk  "Get Lucky"  - I know almost nothing about this band.  But Colbert got me hooked.

Clairy Browne and the Bangin' Rackettes

Cool group from down under.

Love Letter.

London Grammar.
Wasting my Years.  Don't know much about them either. But found this on this other end of year blog

In the world of symphonic metal, there are no bigger names than Nightwish (Finland) and Within Temptation (Netherlands).   Now, the former has a habit of canning lead singers, so it's a big deal when their original lead Tarja joins up with Within Temptation.  You get this.  Paradise
